If you feel like a visit to the ocean you can be there within an hour. In 2.5 hours you can be snow skiing in the mountains or visiting the glow-worm caves of Waitomo. If your gateway into New Zealand is through Auckland Airport it is just a short 3 hour drive south to discover the real New Zealand in Rotorua.
